Local Group Hoping To Make Galt #8 Mine A Historic Site

LETHBRIDGE: A local group has come to the city asking for support to protect and develop a piece of Lethbridge history, which they feel could become a major tourist attraction.

The Galt #8 Mine Historic Site Society is asking for $3.6-million to purchase the property, located at the north end of University Drive, make some immediate repairs to preserve the site and put together a concept business plan.

Alvin Reinhard Fritz made the presentation to Finance Committee, saying that once developed with an interpretive centre that would include things like live theater and a restaurant, it wouldn't have any trouble bringing tourists into our city, "You know I honestly believe that this could be a draw of international acclaim. We do after all have the longest and highest iron trestle bridge in the world, and that is our High Level Bridge, and to see it in the context of this mine site that interprets it so well, would draw people from all over the globe."

An evaluation done by Alvin Reinhard Fritz Architect Inc. in 2012 to determine the structural integrity of the building on the site, determined that they were well constructed and have the potential to be developed into attraction for the general public. Fritz called it, "One of the best preserved mine sites in all of North America."

The project is one of many that came before Finance Committee earlier this week. City Council will debate which ones get their financial support in May.
