City Puts Pruning Ban On Elm Trees To Prevent Disease

Lethbridge: The City is asking residents to refrain from pruning their Elm Trees, as of April 1st.

From April 1st to September 30th, a province-wide pruning ban of Elm Trees is put into place to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease. Pruning Elm trees at this time exposes wounds, providing an opening for Elm Bark Beetles, a carrier of the fungus.

"If your own tree doesn't leaf out this spring. What we tend to look for is, once trees are in full leaf, usually mid-June through July, we'll see a branch or a portion of the tree that will all of a sudden wilt, the leaves will usually curl up, turn brown and just remain on the tree. Also, trees infected later in the season, might change color and drop prematurely." said Urban Forestry Technician, Lindsay Bell. He said these are indicators a tree could be infected.

There has only ever been one tree in Alberta infected with Dutch Elm Disease. Provincial Regulations prohibit the storage, sale, or transport of elm wood.

"Don't move fire wood. That's the big thing. That's the reason we're telling people don't bring firewood into the city. If you're out camping if you're in another province or in another state, these beetles could come in on fire wood and start affecting trees in our city." said Bell.

To report an elm tree displaying these symptoms call the City of Lethbridge Dutch Elm Disease Hotline at 403-320-3075 or the Provincial Hotline at 1-877-ELMS (3567). For more information on Dutch Elm Disease visit
