LETHBRIDGE - A plan to close down the Fish and Game Shooting Range was voted down by City
Council on Tuesday evening.
The resolution brought forward by Councillor Faron Ellis called for the
shooting range to close it's doors until professional security officials were
present at all times and the range permanently shut down at that location by
December 31st, 2016. The vote was 6-3 against the motion, with only Ellis,
Councillor Carlson and Mayor Dodic supporting the idea.
Range Operator Allan Friesen admits he was a little worried about how the
vote would end up, but says "we have certainly a lot of very dedicated and
reasonable folks on Council who have researched it at length and we're very
pleased that they are supportive of us."
Friesen believes this was just political posturing on the part of Ellis. He
says they will continue to work towards relocation plans and are looking for
city support to make that happen. Friesen thinks that will provide stability to
their operation, saying "we've got a lot of very valuable programs and those
have to function, well we've been uncertain about what out status was, so to
move forward, to deliver our programs, to get committment behind them, we have
to relocate the range." Posted on Wednesday, April 03, 2013 at 12/9/2013 1:49:31 AM
