North Regional Park Jumps In Size From 55 Acres To 73
LETHBRIDGE - An amendment to the Hardieville - Legacy Ridge - Uplands Area Structure Plan
will mean a larger North Regional Park.
Two school sites in the area are no longer necessary, so Councillor Joe Mauro
proposed they delete the 18 acre swing site and add it to the park. Council
agreed with a 5-3 vote, with only Councillors Ryan Parker and Faron Ellis, as
well as Mayor Dodic opposed. This change will bring the size of the park from 55 acres to 73.
Mauro pointed to past Councils who decided to create Henderson Lake and
Nicholas Sheran and views this as an opportunity to create another great park
for the community. He sees it as a long term vision, saying "50 years from now
when a lot of us may not be here and our population starts getting to 120, 130,
140,000 people, green space is pretty valuable and anytime we ask our citizens,
one of the things that they enjoy the most and want us to preserve the most is
greenspace and paths and trails and so I just thought that this was something
that we couldn't afford to lose."
