Enchant Woman Faces 16 Charges For Defrauding Social Services

LETHRBIDGE:  A 52-year old Enchant woman faces charges for defrauding social service agencies of more than $90,000.

In October 2012, Regional police were notified about a suspected case of fraud involving a woman falsely obtaining financial and medical supports from multiple provincial agencies. The Economic Crimes Section investigated and determined the applicant lied or exaggerated claims about medical conditions and forged or altered numerous documents over a period of several years.

It's alleged the woman gained financial assistance and medical supplies from Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), Family Support for Children with Disabilities and Alberta Works Income Support Program totaling approximately $91,315.

On Tuesday, April 9th, the woman’s home was search and she was arrested.

Judith Louise Lyczewski, is charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000 and 13 counts of uttering a forged document. She was released from custody with several conditions, including providing police with a copy of any application to any social services agency or provincial government body prior to submission.

Sergeant Christy Woods with Regional Police says, "It is a case where we had to tread lightly and delicately because I believe that there is some legitimate funding that is required for this family." She adds, "The basis of the fraud is asking for funding that's either exaggerated or asking for duplicate funding which is an issue for the government agencies because it's hard to control when one provincial agency may not know what the other agency is doling out."

Lyczewski is scheduled to appear in court April 11.
