LETHBRIDGE: 37-year old Gregory Dempsie and 35-year old Terry Louro were each handed a jail sentence of 15-months Wednesday afternoon, after pleading guilty to counterfeiting charges last month.
Between November 4th and December 8th of last year the two used counterfeit U.S. cash at 21 occassions at 18 businesses in B.C. and Alberta, including Lethbridge. The businesses impacted lost $1,725 either in products or change given to the two for the counterfeit currency.
They were finally caught and arrested on December 8th when an employee at a local business called police with a complaint of the counterfeit money. Upon arrest police found another $15,000 in fake cash on the couple.
Dempsie claimed they found the un-cut counterfeit sheets and tools in Calgary and simply took them.
The pair spent a total of 131 days in pre-trial custody, however because of some difficult circumstances with constantly being moved around to different facilities during that time, the Judge granted credit of time and a half, which works out to 197 days.
