LETHBRIDGE - The City has put together a new Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan that will
replace the one created in 1988.
Manager of Heart of Our City George Kuhl
says one of the main changes will be to the land use strategy. He says "we're
trying to introduce the kind of change to downtown that builds on the strengths
of downtown, so for example, we're creating two new districts, one in the north
half of downtown, one in the south half of downtown, and the one in the north
half would build on sort of the retail and commercial character within that
area, the south part of downtown would build a little more on the residential
and office sort of mixed use character of the area."
Kuhl says they also want to continue to work towards a more pedestrian
friendly area by supporting streetscaping and downtown redevelopment projects in
the upcoming CIP.
As for how this plan will differ from other documents and master plans
created in the past, Kuhl says "this is a little bit more on the regulatory
side, if you compare it to the Heart of Our City Master Plan for example, that
was a conceptual plan. There were some implementation strategies but there
weren't any policies, this document will present some policies and some policy
direction both for the city administration and to provide guidance to the
This plan will come forward to City Council for first reading in May, which
will be followed by a public hearing. It will be back for final approval in
