LETHBRIDGE: ****UPDATE - An improperly extinguished fire pit was the cause of Wednesday nights grass fire
in North Lethbridge.
The blaze started before 7pm Wednesday in the
Alexandre Wilderness area. The wind drove the flames and burned about 100
acres. No buildings were damaged. About 10 Fire units were on scene for up to three hours to extinguish the
Platoon Chief Barry Sorensen says "the ground may be
wet but the wind drys that grass out pretty quickly, the tall prairie
grass with the wind blowing a bit will burn very quickly."
has a message for residents. Sorensen says "this time of year, make
sure their fire pits are extinguished before they leave the area because
it doesn't take much with the wind to whip up the embers, they need to
be properly extinguished."
