May Is Motorcycle Awareness Month

LETHBRIDGE - It's that time of year when motorcycles are hitting city streets and highways.

The motorcycle community of southern Alberta is coming together to promote Motorcycle Awareness Month and is encouraging everyone to do their part in creating the safest environment possible.

President of the Southern Alberta Bikers Dallas Harty says the biggest thing motorists can do to protect bikers is just pay attention. However, he says it's a two way street. Those driving cars and trucks need to treat a motorbike like any other big vehicle, double check blind spots and give space, while bikers need to dress to be seen and protected, target open spaces and use proper signals.

Harty adds "there has been way too much tragedy involving motorbikes in the last number of years and our whole goal is to cut back on the number of tragedies we had, you know we lost a couple here a couple years ago, senselessly left a couple young daughters behind and those are the kinds of things we need to eliminate."
