Fire Prevention Notices Issued In Southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE:  The warmer, sunny weather is helping rid the frustration over a long, dreary winter. However, with some areas of the province now experiencing above normal temperatures, there is a new concern - wildfires.

Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development reports the fire danger rating as high to extreme in central, northwestern and some southern portions of the province. These area didn't get as much snow cover as areas to the east. There were about 25 wildfires across Alberta over the past weekend, and, as usual, all were the result of human activity. The worst fire is in the southern region of County of Grande Prairie. The fire is not in a forest protection area, but about 25 firefighters were sent in to help over the weekend.

Wildfire crews are on high alert, with more than 300 firefighters on duty in the province and another 1,500 that can be called in on short notice, when needed.

There are numerous Fire Bans across the province, including one in Vulcan County. As well, "Fire Prevention Notices" are in effect for the Counties of Warner, Newell, and Cypress as well as the M-D of Pincher Creek.
