Prescribed Burn Set for Waterton to Protect Grasslands

WATERTON: Parks Canada officials are planning a prescribed fire that'll start this week at Waterton Lakes National Park.

The fire is for the "Y-Camp" Burn Unit and will take place between Chief Mountain Highway and where the lower Waterton Lake meets the Dardanelles, and from the Park Gate to Marquis Hole.

The burn is designed to push back aspen and evergreen tree expansion, as the trees have wiped out about 30-per cent of the grasslands in the area over the last 100-years.

Parks Canada noted that before starting a prescribed fire a series of predetermined conditions must be met including weather, terrain, fire behavior, fire control and smoke management.
