Rebuild of Kilmorey Lodge Doesn't Appear to be Getting Much Closer

LETHBRIDGE: Over four years after the Kilmorey Lodge burned to the ground in Waterton Lakes National Park, not much progress has been made in replacing the structure.

Park officials say reconstruction of the hotel, which first set up shop in Waterton in 1926, has been delayed because of community restrictions.

Field Unit Superintendent Ifan Thomas explained that before owner Locklynn Craig can proceed with the new building, there are several things that need to be included, "There are all sorts of objectives he's got to meet there. Height restrictions, the number of rooms he's allowed to have in there, you've got to provide adequate parking, you've got to provide accommodations for staff, and he's got to make sure that the building has appropriate set-backs so that it doesn't dominate the block where it's located."

Thomas also went over the coversations they've had with Craig to this point, "Over the years there have been proposals brought forward, but they really did exceed anything that could be approved. In 2011 he withdrew all of his proposals and he was sort of taking a different tack. But we have had some recent discussions with him definitely, and I'm optimistic that we're making some progress."

As of this time Kilmorey Lodge owner Locklynn Craig has not returned any of the phone calls made by Country 95 News.
