LETHBRIDGE - The issue of the Atrium Building was back before City Council on
The City is working it's way toward a possible demolition of the
site after the owners failed to take any action.
The tender documents are now going to the demolition engineers, who will make
sure all the specifications are correct.
Mayor Dodic says they still don't know how much the demolition will cost, but
it will likely exceed the $300,000 value of the land. As for who will pay, Dodic
uses the example of a $500,000 cost, saying "we know that we can have the land
but if the cost is $500,000 and the owner of the land has no assets, we may be
limited to that $300,000. That's going to be the difficult decision for Council,
is how much are you prepared to pay in excess of the value of the land, by way
of a taxpayer expense really, to have that building torn down."
The city expects to be in a position to award a tender by June 24th.
