Lethbridge Hosts Victor Walk For Victims Of Sexual Abuse

Lethbridge: Promoting healing for victims of sexual abuse, so they can become victors.

That's the theme of the national Victor Walk, spear-head by former N-H-L player, Theo Fleury.

Lethbridge will be hosting its own walk in Henderson Park, on May 23rd at 9 AM. Participants can meet at the Kiwanis Picnic Shelter before walking around the lake. Walkers will then meet back at the Kiwanis Picnic Shelter at 10 AM, where speakers will present. Booths will also be set up by local organizations that have counselling for those that have experienced sexual abuse in Lethbridge.

The walk is not only meant to raise funds, but also create awareness.

"Eight million Canadians have experienced childhood sexual abuse. One in three girls will experience an unwanted sexual act. One in six boys will experience an unwanted sexual act. 95% of these children will know their perpetrators, so those statistics are pretty alarming" says Walk Coordinator, Torre Truba.

Fleury's part in the movement, aims to create awareness of child sexual abuse in Canada and promote healing for victims, so they can become victors.  His personal connection to the campaign stems from years of sexual abuse at the hands of his hockey coach, Graham James.

Funds from the Victor walk will go towards the Little Warriors Foundation, the Sexual Assault Centre for Quinte and District, and the Siksika Nation.
