High Streamflow Advisory Issued For Oldman River

LETHBRIDGE:    ***Up-Date as of Friday morning.

As expected, Alberta Environment has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for several rivers around south-west Alberta.

The advisory impacts the Highwood, Sheep, Elbow and Bow rivers, as well as the Oldman River and it's tributaries up-stream of Lethbridge.  The river level is rising quickly and will continue to rise.

Between 50 and 100 mm of precipitation has fallen along the eastern slopes in southwestern Alberta since Wednesday morning. The heaviest precipitation fell as snow at higher elevations in the Upper Oldman and Bow River basins. Additional amounts of up to 40 mm are possible in the Bow Basin on Friday.

Major flooding is not expected but minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas. Those who live close to affected rivers and streams need to be cautious.  Walking along river banks at this time is not advised as the banks become unstable from the higher water flow and can give way.

Steamflows are being monitored and further advisories will be issued if the situation changes.  Residents can also check the Alberta Environment website:  http://environment.alberta.ca/forecasting/advisories/130523a.pdf
