Lethbridge M-P Jim Hillyer Intends To Run In Medicine Hat In Next Election

LETHBRIDGE:  The current M-P for Lethbridge has wasted no time in announcing his intentions, now that the electoral boundaries have been adjusted ahead of the next federal election.

In a news release Friday, Jim Hillyer indicated he intends to run under the Conservative banner in the realigned Medicine Hat riding next election in 2015. At that time, the new electoral boundaries come into effect, which means the Medicine Hat riding will now include the Blood Reserve, Cardston, Raymond, Milk River and Warner.

Quoting Hillyer, "I want to assure the constituents of my current Lethbridge riding, that I am fully committed to representing their interests until the next federal election in 2015. But, when the new boundaries come into effect, I will run in Medicine Hat. It has always been my practice to represent the people with whom I live, my fiends and my neighbours. I grew up in Stirling and my wife and I are raising our family in Raymond. This is my home, so this is where I will run".

Every 10 years, after a census, the number of electoral districts and their boundaries are revised to reflect population shifts and growth. The process is called electoral redistribution.

Since June 28th, 2004, there have been 308 federal electoral districts in Canada. However, in accordance with the Fair Representation Act, which received Royal Assent and came into force on December 16, 2011, the number of seats contested in the expected 2015 election will increase to 338.

Six of the new electoral seats were added in Alberta. It means that the new Lethbridge riding, which formerly included areas to the south of the city down towards Cardston, will now include just the City and County of Lethbridge, which has a combined population of 105,999.

The expanded Medicine Hat riding will include the previously mentioned communities, with a population of 102,847. For a full explanation of the boundaries of the new Medicine Hat riding, follow these links:
