River Valley Fire Ban Lifted And High Streamflow Advisory Ended For Oldman

LETHBRIDGE:  The rain has done its duty.  The Lethbridge Fire Department lifted the Fire Ban in the River Valley area Friday morning but, still advise caution with fires.

Also Friday morning, Alberta Environment discontinued the High Streamflow Advisory for the Oldman River and it's tributaries up-stream of Lethbridge, as river levels began to fall.

The High Streamflow Advisory for several rivers around the south-west have been continued, including the Highwood, Sheep, Elbow and Bow rivers, which are either rising or peaking.

Isolated showers are possible in extreme southern portions of the province over the next 24 hours.

Between 50 and 100-mm of precipitation fell along the eastern slopes of the rockies since Wednesday morning. Unofficial totals as of Friday morning are 49-mm for Pincher Creek, 44-mm for Waterton, 64-mm at Stavely and 45-mm at Claresholm.

Major flooding is not expected but minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas.   Those who live close to affected rivers and streams need to be cautious. Walking along river banks at this time is not advised as the banks become unstable from the higher water flow and can give way.

Steamflows are being monitored and further advisories will be issued if the situation changes. Residents can also check the Alberta Environment website: http://environment.alberta.ca/forecasting/advisories/130523a.pdf
