LETHBRIDGE: Medicine Hat Conservative MP LaVar Payne is a bit disappointed in his
Lethbridge caucus colleague.
On Friday, local M-P Jim Hillyer announced he would be contesting the
Conservative nomination against Payne in the next federal election. It stems
from the fact that new boundary changes will mean Hillyer, who lives in Raymond,
will be residing in the new Medicine Hat riding.
The new electoral boundaries come into effect when the next federal election
rolls around in 2015. The Medicine Hat riding will now include the Blood
Reserve, Cardston, Raymond, Milk River and Warner.
Unfortunately, Payne didn't find out about Hillyer's intention until it hit
the media on Friday. According to Payne, "It was really early in the process,
so I was quite surprised that he (Hillyer) was jumping on this thing so
Payne says Hillyer never contacted him before making his public announcement,
" It was interesting because he sent out all the press releases, talked to the
media and then, I think, he decided he should call me".
The current Medicine Hat M-P says he would have preferred that Hillyer spoke
to him before announcing his intention to the media Payne says he has to talk
with the Conservative party to see what the process will be going forward.
