LETHBRIDGE - Pork producers and industry partners from southern Alberta will gather in
Lethbridge on Thursday night for the Alberta Pork regional meetings.
They will discuss where they're at as an industry and go over some activities
and initiatives on behalf of producers.One of the big things they will be
looking at is the upcoming change to the Code of Practice for the current
handling of pigs and how that will affect producers.
It's a tough time for the industry right now. Spokesperson Geoff Geddes says
"producers have been dealing with, through most of last year, record high feed
costs, hog prices were plummitting over the past year, so it forced a lot of
producers into more debt and forced quite a number of producers out of the
industry all together over the last little while. There's been some recovery of
prices early this year, but the producers who were still in the industry, a lot
of them sustained some significant losses, so you know it's a really challenging
Geddes adds they are optimistic about the future and are hopeful that prices
will recover and that they can work with the government on ways to help support
The regional meeting takes place at the Main Pavilion at Exhibition Park on Thursday night from 5 to 7:30pm.
