Coaldale Town Office Closed After Soil Contamination Discovered
COALDALE - The Coaldale Town Office was closed on Friday as a precaution after town
officials learned of soil contamination under the building.
The building was built on the site of a former gas station more than 30 years
ago and a report from an Environmental firm warned of unacceptably high levels
of certain contaminants in the soil.
Follow up information shows the staff were not in immediate danger since the
contaminants would be at a considerable depth under the concrete pad where the
building was constructed.
The report has identified a number of concerns and the town will be
investigating them fully and working with Alberta occupational Health and
Safety. They expect to receive more detailed information within two weeks.
Kim Craig says "this situation could potentially have serious consequences
down the road. Council and administration need to make sure we’re ready for any
eventuality, up to and including moving to a new Town office if that’s
required. Again, we will do everything that needs to be done to ensure the
safety of Town staff and the residents of Coaldale."
He adds when they get more information, they will have some very serious decisions to make. Posted on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 12/7/2013 2:46:50 PM
