Community Paramedic Program Brings Health Services to Home Care Patients

LETHBRIDGE: A new pilot project is off the ground in Lethbridge that offers local home care patients the option of treatment for certain issues, without having to leave their residence.

A specially trained paramedic will provide services such as taking measurements of electrical activity in the heart, monitoring vital signs, collecting laboratory specimens, administering medications, treating wounds, catheterization and re-hydration therapy.

Alberta Health Services is anticipating that four or five people a day will use the service, which will also take pressure off the local ER department.

There are currently about 2,000 home care clients in the Lethbridge area, and they will all be able to take advantage of the program.
