City Council Officially Approves Capital Budget

LETHBRIDGE - The new Capital Improvement Program was officially approved by City Council on Monday.

Councillor Tom Wickersham is excited with what they were able to achieve. He says "we weren't able to address all of the wants and desires of our community and community groups, but I believe that this CIP program takes us into the future and gives us a firm foundation for future development within our community and to make our community more livable for people."

The budget includes funding for a $55-million aquatics centre, $6.5-million to renew the Yates Centre, almost $8-million for reconstruction and streetscaping in the downtown and $4.5-million for amenities in the North Regional Park.

The CIP also includes conditional, unfunded future commitments towards the redevelopment of Exhibition Park and a new Performing Arts Centre.

Wickersham adds "this is probably going to cause a 1.18 per cent compression upon residential and commercial taxes within the City of Lethbridge for the next operating budget."
