City Accepts New Agropur Wastewater Agreement

LETHBRIDGE - City Council has agreed to enter a new agreement with Agropur to deal with wastewater from the Sunnyrose Cheese plant in Diamond City.

The initial agreement was made in 2009 to accept the wastewater by truck. However, with plans to expand cheese production, Agropur requested that the City receive the wastewater by pipeline.

All costs of construction will be the responsibility of Agropur, as well, there will be a one time connection fee and an annual payment representing the differential of the municipal portion of the property taxes.

Councillor Faron Ellis says "it was quite clear from all the independent sources that we had, the objective facts, that this plant was not going to move into the City even if we said no to it, so it was essentially saving a plant or at least including the expansion for the economic good of the entire region."

Ellis adds there will be benefits for the environment and the County by not having trucks on the road to transport the wastewater.
