Fort Macleod Axe Murderer Denied Open Custody

LETHBRIDGE - The young Fort Macleod man who admitted to brutally murdering his mother with an axe in 2009 was pushing for open custody on Wednesday.

The man, who can't be named as he was only 17 at the time of the murder, told the court that he had success with programs and treatment at the Calgary Young Offenders Centre and was hoping to move into a half way house to begin a transition into the community and so he could take advantage of an apprenticeship program.

However, the crown said that while the case coordinator agrees there has been good progress, they were not in a position to recommend any change to his sentence and a further risk assessment is needed.

The next review hearing date is expected to be set on September 25th.
