Coalhurst Continues To Grow And Thrive In Its Centennial Year

COALHURST:    As it celebrates its 100th birthday, the town of Coalhurst has registered modest growth.

The latest census shows an increase of 32-people and the town now has a population of 2,301.

The small town has survived adversity over the years. It had a population of 1,200 in 1935. On December 9th of that year, a mine disaster took the lives of 16 miners.

According to the Town's web site, the mine was closed after the tragedy and it took the town 40 years to recover:  "In the years that followed, businesses and residents left, leaving a virtual ghost town that was unincorporated reverting to hamlet status. At its lowest point, only a mere handful of residents remained. Then, in the 1970s, there was renewed interest in the area as people sought a quiet place to live, away from the city but close enough to enjoy all the benefits of city life".

Coalhurst was reincorporated in 1979.
