LETHBRIDGE: A lack of entry level construction workers across Southern Alberta has helped forge a partnership between the province and several local groups.
Teamworks Career Centre, the Canadian Home Builders' Association - Lethbridge Region and Alberta Human Resources have created the Building Careers program, which is aimed at filling construction job openings Albertans.
The program is reserved for Alberta residents between the ages of 18 and 64 who are currently or soon to be unemployed.
Teamwork Training President Ryan Miller goes over some of the areas that the training will prepare workers for, "They get really the essential tool use and they get to use utilize it whether it's framing, whether it's sheeting, whether it's roofing, whether it's into the plumbing, the electrical. So they get exposure to it all throughout the program."
Those involved in the program will also learn some basic computer skills and go over construction site expectations and rules. At the end of the program they will then get to work on a real construction site for work experience.
Miller noted that the 12-week program is free and participants may qualify for a training allowance.
