Fire And Police Departments Deal With Another Juvenile Initiated Arson

LETHBRIDGE:  The tally of youth generated arson in the city is increasing. After a garage was set on fire on Rutgers Crescent early Tuesday morning, causing $60,000 damage and killing a family pet, there was another incident Tuesday evening.

At about 8:59, police and firefighters responded to a report that two young boys lit a couch on fire along the 1300 block of 23rd Avenue North. The fire spread to a nearby shed before being extinguished by the fire department.  No one was injured and damages are estimated at approximately $1,500.

The boys, aged seven and eight, are too young to be criminally charged and were released to the custody of their parents.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act the age of criminal responsibility is 12. Anyone under 12 cannot be criminally charged.

Quoting from the Police statement, "In general, when investigating crimes involving young people the Police Service recognizes there is often a need for additional intervention in order to address underlying issues that could lead to recidivism. Police work cooperatively with social service agencies, schools and other community partners to assess risk and identify strategies to help young people reduce the likelihood of further contact with the criminal justice system".
