LETHBRIDGE: The tally of youth generated arson in the city is
increasing. After a garage was set on fire on Rutgers Crescent early Tuesday
morning, causing $60,000 damage and killing a family pet, there was another
incident Tuesday evening.
At about 8:59, police and firefighters responded to a
report that two young boys lit a couch on fire along the 1300 block of 23rd
Avenue North. The fire spread to a nearby shed before being extinguished by
the fire department. No one was injured and damages are estimated at
The boys, aged seven and eight, are too young to be
criminally charged and were released to the custody of their parents.
Youth Criminal Justice Act the age of criminal responsibility is 12. Anyone
under 12 cannot be criminally charged.

people the Police Service recognizes there is often a need for additional
intervention in order to address underlying issues that could lead to
recidivism. Police work cooperatively with social service agencies, schools and
other community partners to assess risk and identify strategies to help young
