City Reviewing Open Burning Bylaw

LETHBRIDGE - The city is reviewing the open burning bylaw for backyard fire pits.

They're looking at clarifying materials that are acceptable to burn, adding wind speed restrictions and creating provisions for issuing tickets.

This is in response to concerns raised from several residents over air quality as a result of backyard fire pits. The fire department typically receives up to 60 calls a year and often the complaints are from burning debris causing heavy or irritating smoke and people having large fires.

The proposed bylaw amendments will be presented to City Council in January.
