Central Alberta: Someone in the province's central region has contracted hantavirus. Now health officials are urging Albertans to take precautions to protect themselves.
You can get the virus through contact with urine or feces from infected rodents. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vivien Suttorp says when cleaning out a barn, grain silo, or cottage make sure to wet down any mouse poop so you don't create aerosoles and that you wear protective equipment like gloves and a mask.
"Hantavirus impacts the respiratory system. You can end up with really serious respiratory symptoms and that's basically it. It's actually the impact on the lungs that will cause the death." said Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Vivien Suttorp.
The last case in the Lethbridge area was back in 2008.
