Local Scientists Hold Protest and Rally at University of Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE: A number of students and staff at the University of Lethbridge were joined by Lethbridge Research Centre employees and members of the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group Monday for the 'Stand up for Science' rally at the university.

They joined rallies across Canada in places like Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton and Halifax.

Their common message is that the federal government is cutting far too much funding from research, unless it has a perceived economic benefit.

Local event organizer Breanne Kamenz talks about the impact it could have on our city, "One of the main funding programs for professors, the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) Discovery Grant, has dropped from 70% success rate to a 40% success rate. It is that money that the professors use for supplying things like equipment, chemicals and actually paying undergraduate researchers to work in their labs. So if they are losing that funding, then we're decreasing the amount of opportunities our youth has to actually do fundamental scientific research and spark their curiosity."

Kamenz stated that you can help their cause by contacting your local MP with your concerns, or by visiting https://evidencefordemocracy.ca/standupforscience.
