LETHBRIDGE - Work has begun to bring down the Atrium building downtown.
Equipment has been brought in, fences have been put up, and crews are
starting site prep to protect the adjacent buildings.
Director of Community Services Bary Beck says "you're not going to see like
you see on TV, news, or in Hollywood where they blow a building up and it drops
in one piece in five seconds, you won't see a wrecking ball just ripping into
this thing, because of the adjacency of the other buildings what they'll end
up doing is nibbling at the building, bringing little pieces down at a time and
working through the building very cautiously because safety is the paramount
Beck points out the alley behind the structure will be quite busy during the
demolition and they could potentially close one lane of traffic on
7th Street for about a week, but that hasn't been fully decided.
The actual demolition is expected to get started sometime next week and could
take up to 30 days.
