Lethbridge Civic Election Campaign Has First Ever Aboriginal Candidate.

LETHBRIDGE:    A candidate with roots to the Blood (Kainai) Reserve in Southern Alberta is seeking a Councillor's seat on City Council in the October 21st, civic election.

Martin Heavy Head has lived his entire life in Lethbridge and area. He sees the City as a connection to the past, grounded in the present, and a director of the future.

Martin is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology at the U-of-L. He has worked in tourism, science, and the medical field as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

The potential civic leader recognizes that Lethbridge has made gains in addressing homelessness with the Bringing Lethbridge Home: Plan to End Homelessness. He will be focussed on advocacy for the city's most vulnerable citizens.

According to Martin, he wants to use his experiences to tackle the issues of poverty; lack of affordable and accessible child care;sustainable development; and the need for a municipal food policy. His news release notes, " Issues of food sustainability are important to our future. Encouraging urban agriculture in an agriculture based city like Lethbridge just makes sense. Increasing access to community gardens and encouraging local production is important. A Municipal Food Policy and Committee would advance this theme".
