Construction Underway For Blackspring Ridge Wind Project

LETHBRIDGE - Construction has begun on the Blackspring Ridge Wind Project near Carmangay.

Enbridge Inc. and EDF Canada own the project which will include 166 wind turbines over 44,000 acres and will provide 300 megawatts of energy production.

Enbridge Vice President of Green Power and Transmission Don Thompson says when completed it will be Western Canada's largest wind energy project and is close to the biggest in Canada.

Thompson adds the project is located in the Carmangay area because it offers a number of really attractive features. He says "the location is in an area that is prone to prolonged periods of windy conditions, it's also on a rise so the topology is a little bit higher, the location relative to the transmission line is another key feature."

The project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2014 when the first electrons will go into the Alberta grid.
