LETHBRIDGE: About 400 people took in the Chamber of Commerce all candidates forum at the
Yates Centre Wednesday night.
Topics ranged from the arts, to attracting business, recycling, and the token
flouride questions coming from those in attendance as well as a media panel.
Attendees that Country 95 News spoke with after the Councillor candidates
portion at the forum appeared to be looking at a wide range of issues during this
campaign. But there was a common thread among many of the responses - transparency and fiscal responsibility.
One lady named Jane responded, "I think honesty and integrity and the ability
to be respectful to citizens".
In spite of a steady round of all-candidate forums, public interest in
getting to know the candidates remains very high and many of those in attendance
agreed the forums are the best way to learn first-hand about those seeking a
position on Council.
During one interview, a man named John stated, "The thing I am looking for is
fiscal responsibility and for Council to take back control of our city from the
Administration". He went on to say, "It's easy for people to simply publish stuff
on a web site but here they get questions and they have to answer off-the-cuff
and I think you really get down to the core of what they're thinking".
Another man attending the forum said he didn't know any of the candidates and
was able to get a better understanding of who they are. Another lady left the forum
saying it had helped her choose her, "five, six, seven and eight picks" for who
she would cast a ballot for.
