Wanted Alberta Sex Offender Located in Seattle

LETHBRIDGE:   According to Seattle Police Department officials, 48-year old Michael Sean Stanley was found in downtown Seattle on Thursday and was ordered to register as a sex offender.

He wasn't arrested because Canadian authorities have declined to try extraditing him. However, Seattle police say Stanley could be arrested if he fails to register as a sex offender.

Stanley has a long history of sexual offences against women and children and had been missing since October 1st, when he cut off his electronic-monitoring bracelet at or near Lloydminster, on the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary.

Regional Police confirmed Stanley was in Lethbridge Friday, October 4th and his vehicle was found at a west side home the following Monday.

Edmonton Police say Stanley crossed the border from BC into Blaine, Washington, on that Monday night. In a news conference two days later, Detective Chris Hayduk stated the Edmonton police service had notified the appropriate agencies in the United States.

Stanley has American Citizenship, which may mean he didn't need a passport. Although Stanley is the subject of a Canada-wide arrest warrant, he has no outstanding warrants in the U-S and justice officials in Canada don't have the legal power to arrest him there.
