Preliminary Hearing Set for Accused in Child Prostitution Case
LETHBRIDGE: A Lethbridge man accused of hiring a 13-year old girl for sex, has elected trial by judge and jury with a preliminary hearing.
Robert John Gerard was charged last February, at the age of 61, as part of an investigation that was launched after Regional Police learned that a 32-year old male was instructing the youth to prostitute herself and give him the money.
Gerard was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, procuring a youth for sex and invitation to sexual touching. He was released from court under conditions that he have no contact with anyone under the age of 16 unless accompanied by an adult, not to be within 100 metres of any school, playground, daycare or recreational facility where children under 16 may be present.
A preliminary hearing has been set for late March, to determine if the case is strong enough to proceed to trial.
