New Plastic For Your Wallet

LETHRBIDGE:  The new $100, $50 and $20 Canadian polymer bills got company on Thursday, as the Bank of Canada introduced the new $10 and $5 notes. Why Thursday, November 7th for the introduction? Read on to learn the significance.

The new $10 bill pays tribute to Canada's railway.  The last spike of the trans Canada rail line was driven into a rail at Craigllachie, B.C. on November 7th, 1885, by C-P's financial backer, Donald Alexander Smith.

The new $5 bill depicts the Canadarm 2 and Dextre on the back of the bill and recognize Canada's contribution to space exploration.

The $10 and $5 bills are the last in the polymer series to be released and will gradually filter out through banks and merchants.  The Canadian Mint expects the new bills to last two to three times longer than the old "paper" versions.
