New City Council Takes Stand Against Consolidation of Local Ambulance Dispatch to Calgary

LETHBRIDGE:    In the interest of health and safety for city residents, the newly minted Lethbridge City Council has unanimously approved a resolution calling on the Alberta government to reverse its decision to consolidate local ambulance dispatch.

According to Mayor Chris Spearman, Council believes the Alberta Health decision to consolidate the service will not enhance patient safety or ambulance response times in life-threatening emergencies but, instead, do the exact opposite.

The consolidation process will disconnect fire and ambulance response, which sends both services out to many emergency calls, such as traffic collisions and fires. It has proven to be a very effective and efficient way to provide service in the city. Fire, Emergency and City officials have voiced concern that dismantling the unified service will place residents at risk, not only in Lethbridge, but south-western Alberta as well.

Lethbridge is one of more than a dozen provincial centres to unsuccessfully appeal the Alberta Health decision. City Council is encouraging residents to express their concerns to local MLAs and to the Premier Alison Redford
