Alberta Health Confirms 28 Cases Of Measles In Southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE - There are 28 confirmed cases of measles in southern Alberta.

All cases to date involve people who are unimmunized and that number is not a surprise to Alberta Heath officials.

Dr. Vivien Suttorp says there are a number of families who are under quarantine and individuals in those households are expected to get measles. She adds "the areas where we have had confirmed measles cases are exactly in the
communities where we have the lowest immunization rates and those are some of the lowest immunization rates across the province, so those are in the communities of Fort Macleod, Coaldale, and the County of Lethbridge."

There is no travel advisory specific to southern Alberta, however, Suttorp says they strongly recommend all sports teams in the area to advise visiting teams of the situation and encourage their players to be immunized before coming here.

To help stop the spread of measles, there are additional Immunization Clinics:

Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013
2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Main Pavilion, Lethbridge Exhibition Park
(Note: use south entrance)

Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013
2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Main Pavilion, Lethbridge Exhibition Park
(Note: use south entrance)

Clinics are intended for:

  • Children aged 6 months to 18 years who have not had vaccine
  • Children 4 years and older who have not had a second dose of vaccine
  • Health care workers who need the first or second dose of vaccine
  • Alberta Health Services volunteers born between 1957 and 1970 who need the first or second dose of vaccine
  • (NOTE: Anyone born on or after 1970 should instead call their local health unit for immunization)
