LETHBRIDGE - A couple concerned residents came to City Council on Monday recommending that
the city's Real Estate Department be changed into a licensed
Jill Skriver and Brian Shockey feel the obvious benefits would
be financial, as the city would not be paying out commissions to other
brokerages, but also it would ensure that the city would have somebody acting
strictly on their behalf. Shockey says "in these land sales, like we're talking
millions of dollars worth of land, commissions are secondary to the fact that
the city wants to be represented so that it sees full benefit. Right now, the
Real Estate Department with the City of Lethbridge does not have anybody who has
any experience, per se, in the real estate industry."
They point out that Calgary and Edmonton have both adopted the brokerage
system, not only for a financial benefit in retaining their own commissions, but
it has also added to their credibility.
The City manager will review the information and present City Council with an
analysis by March 31, 2014.
