2013 Snow Removal Budget Finishes Year With Surplus

LETHBRIDGE - Despite a snowy month of December, it looks like the City of Lethbridge snow and ice removal budget will have a surplus for 2013.

There are still some contract accounts that haven't been settled up for the big events in December, but with a budget of just over $3-million, there's an unspent balance over $415,000.

Director of Infrastructure Services Doug Hawkins says "we had a very mild, by winter standards, late winter and early spring last year. March and April are often some of our heaviest snow removal months and that just didn't happen in early 2013, so that meant the unspent money was available to deal with that major storm that first week of December."

The surplus money will go into the Municipal Stabilization Reserve to help cover any possible shortfall this year.
