Landlords Warned To Watch For Fraudulent Internet Or Telephone Scams

Lethbridge: University of Lethbridge Off Campus Housing is warning landlords to be wary of fraudulent internet or telephone scams.

A person is posing as a potential U of L student or parent of a student. They make arrangements to pay their entire school term rental accommodations in advance. If the landlord agrees, a fraudulent cheque or money order will be sent, which can take about a month to be cleared through the banks. Meanwhile, the fraudster will ask some of the money be sent back for a number of reason.

To avoid the scam, it's suggested landlords don't send any money back until the bank has cleared the payment.  If you suspect you're the target of fraud, contact Lethbridge Regional Police.
