LETHBRIDGE: A new non-profit organization named Environment
Lethbridge will launch on January 31st.
The organization will be
increasing awareness and engagement, working towards removing barriers that keep
people from adopting sustainable practices, and advise City Council on
environmental issues. Residents are also encouraged to get involved by
volunteering with Environment Lethbridge or by donating funds.
Steering Committee Chair Tom Cain talks about how they plan on making the
group as accessible as possible, "There's different opportunities that might
come up for a storefront operation where people could drop in and get some
information. There will be a website capability where they can go there and ask
Cain also noted that they want to put the spot-light on environmental
initiatives in our city, which are far too often being overlooked, "When they
fixed up the Enmax Centre, they recycled all sorts of the bricks and everything
that they could possibly do, but nobody heard about that. Very few people know
that Park Place Shopping Centre is the greenest shopping centre in Canada.
There's well kept secrets all over the place, we need to get the information out
and get more momentum in our own city."
The group was formed by a group of concerned citizens after working with the
Environment Committee for City Council to develop an outline of what a
sustainability-focused organization could look like.
The official launch
of Environment Lethbridge will take place at CASA from 3:30 PM-7 PM. To register
