LETHBRIDGE: Animal rights advocates will be just outside of
Fort Macleod this weekend, protesting at the Bouvry Plant.
They're opposed to the slaughter of horses at the facility and trying to
raise awareness, stating that Alberta is the horse slaughter capital of
Anita Virginillo with Lethbridge Animal Rights Effort discussed one of the
groups major concerns, "The way that the horse slaughter facilities are set up,
they were never really created for horse slaughter, and because a horse is a
flight animal they'll resist until their last breath, so it's almost virtually
impossible to get a quick kill like it is with cattle or pigs."
Adding to that, Virginillo noted that they also want to create awareness
about an issue that they feel is feeding the bigger problem, "Where the problem
stems is from all the irresponsible breeding, so that's what we're trying to
draw attention to, that we need to be more responsible with the breeding
practices, and that would end the horse slaughter business entirely."
The protest runs Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00.
