MP Jim Hillyer Consults With Local Business Community Ahead of Federal Budget

LETHBRIDGE:  The local Member of Parliament looked to the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday to gather input and feedback for this year's Federal budget.

Jim Hillyer says the federal government wants to make the right choices, and who better to ask than those on the front lines of the economy, "Even though there's a lot of us in Parliament who have been in business, if you don't keep your ear to the ground and your feet back at home, you begin to think that Ottawa is the way the world really works. The people who have to live with those decisions, know the result and they have the best ideas".

During the meeting with local business leaders, Hillyer noted the biggest issue he heard revolved around the labour shortage, "We want to find ways to address that and we talked about job training and one of the best ways to address labour shortage and, at the same time unemployment, is to have effective career and jobs and trades training".

Hillyer says he also heard the need to continue efforts to balance the federal budget by 2015 and business leaders don't what the government to backtrack on reducing regulations and red tape, which slows business development.

The Lethbridge M-P emphasized that anyone can offer ideas and feedback for the federal budget by sending their information to your local M-P through the mail, dropping them off at the constituency office, using email or your M-P's web site has a pre-budget questionare that you can fill out:

M-P's across the country are holding consultations in their constituencies ahead of the next federal budget. There's no exact date for when Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will bring down the budget but financial leaders are expecting it to be mid February. To date, Flaherty has maintained the focus of the federal budget will be fiscal restraint, so the government can elimnate its $17.9-billion budget deficit.
