Crossings Ice Complex Remains On Schedule Despite An Ugly December

LETHBRIDGE: The Crossings Ice Complex, also known as the twin ice area, is finally starting to take shape on the far end of West Lethbridge.

The first phase will include two NHL size rinks and a curling centre.

Recreation and Culture Manager Ashley Matthews discussed how the weather played a part in their progress, "We still are on schedule, we fell behind a bit there in December when we got all that snow, but January was a fantastic month and allowed the guys to catch-up again as far as the schedule is concerned."

Matthews also gave an update on the stage they're at now, "First thing they have to do is pour the footings into the ground as such and so you really see nothing, you see equipment out there and so that is really the next step. The steel will be coming in in March, and once the steel starts to go up then you'll start to see a structure of some sort and a lot more excitement as far as visual."

As far as the timeline goes for phase one, Matthews explained that they're on track to finish by the end of 2015, with groups being able to use it the following summer.

He also touched on phase two, which include a aquatic and leisure centre. Matthews stated that they're now in the process of putting together the request for proposal for an architectural engineering firm and construction management firm, saying that should take about three months. After that he expects the design phase and public consultations to take about a year, with construction of phase two beginning at that point.
